Patient Support Services in Edinburgh

Visibility Scotland is proud to announce that, on 1st April, we will become the new service provider for Edinburgh’s Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion (PAEP) Patient Support Service. This service is located within the Eye Department and is funded by Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership.

Visibility Scotland have provided Patient Support Services across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for over 18 years. Our Patient Support Services provide holistic, person centred support, tailored to the needs of each patient. The service acts as a bridge between the clinic and community based services, connecting patients with relevant local and national organisations, creating a seamless pathway of service provision.


It can be devastating when someone receives the news that their vision is deteriorating and that clinically “there is no more that can be done”. This is where Visibility Scotland plays a vital role. We deliver a “can-do” attitude; every problem has a solution or an assistive aid that can help. We support people to reach their desired goals and maintain or regain their independence.


The Patient Support Service provides patients with dedicated time after their clinical appointment to share any concerns they may have about living with sight loss in a safe space. The service is open to all patients of the PAEP, regardless of where they live.

Patient Support Workers are skilled professionals who can offer:

  • Information on different eye conditions and the impact these may have on an individual’s vision
  • Emotional support and a listening ear for any worriers or concerns an individual may have about living with sight loss
  • Visual strategies: hints and tips on how an individual can use their remaining vision to aid reading and navigation
  • Low Vision Support: advice on magnification, positioning and environmental changes to help with reading
  • Demonstration of aids and equipment to help make day to day tasks easier high-tech
  • Advice on assistive technology, making devices accessible (computers, smartphones and tablets) and demonstration of helpful apps
  • We are also able to sell the equipment that we demonstrate through our social enterprise
  • Innovative support for individual’s with neurological visual changes
  • Access to peer support and self-management groups
  • Education and employment support
  • Information on benefits and entitlements and referral to welfare rights services
  • Direct referral into Rehabilitation and Mobility Services provided by Sight Scotland
  • Direct referral into Social Work Locality Teams
  • Referral and signposting to other local and national services
  • Support for carers
  • Assistance with registration as Sight Impaired or Severely Sight Impaired (partially sighted or blind)
