Local Opticians
- If you are a UK resident, you can get a free NHS eye examination in Scotland. This is not just to test your sight; it’s a thorough examination to check the health of your eyes and find any eye problems before they become more serious.
Find a local optician.
What to do if you have an eye problem
If you have an eye problem you should always phone a local community optometry practice (opticians) as your first port of call, and not another health professional such as a GP. If your optician is closed and you’re concerned about your vision, phone NHS 24 free on 111.
Free NHS-funded eye examinations are available in Scotland to all UK residents and some eligible overseas visitors. This includes appointments to help you with eye infections and concerns about your eyes or vision.
The optician will ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment for your eye problem. In some cases this may include being referred to an ophthalmologist in the hospital.
