A few weeks ago our Digital Communications Intern, Lara, travelled down to London to meet with the other interns who have been on the Thomas Pocklington Trust internship.
Lara from Visibility Scotland stands next to blue London Gatwick sign with white text. She is wearing a white top with black trousers holding a bag.
Lara was greeted by session hosts Jamie Ward, Head of Learning and Development at Channel 4 as well as Mollie Foskett, Learning and Development Advisor at Channel 4.
The aim of the group session was to give an insight to Jamie and Mollie as well as the TPT Interns. Each individual discussed different topics, from their sight loss journeys to their day-to-day tasks whilst being an intern at their organisation. Everyone who was there had a different eye condition and a different story.
Lara’s talking points consisted of four main topics. She started off with an introduction, consisting of where she was from and a physical description so those with severe sight loss could gain an understanding of her appearance. Then she went onto discuss her role at Visibility Scotland, what she does on a day-to-day basis and that no two days are the same. After this, she went on to talk about how she was approached by RNIB (Royal National Institute of the Blind) Connect Radio off the back of some of the work she had been doing and how proud she was to be able to tell her story.
Lara, Visibility Scotland staff member is standing in front of a group whilst giving a presentation to the Thomas Pocklington Trust Interns. She is wearing black trousers, a white top and her hair is down.
Lara’s next talking point was the one that she felt was the most important and valuable – her sight loss story. Of course, everybody’s story is special and individual to them, however, Lara considers herself lucky as majority of the interns had sight loss from a very young age. Lara had her vision for the best part of 22 years. Her presentation was rounded up by a brief summary and a quote by Hellen Keller “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see darkness.”
After each presentation, Jamie and Mollie gave feedback on what areas were done well and where could be improved. Lara was super happy with her feedback especially as there were no negatives!
