Rural areas often lack the service provision needed to appropriately support vision impaired and blind community members. We’re working to change that through our D&G Out and About project, which provides practical support to residents across Dumfries and Galloway, including:
- information on eye conditions
- strategies to make the most of your remaining vision
- equipment and assistive technology demonstrations
- a listening ear for any worriers or concerns about living with vision impairment
- direct referrals to other organisations and services.
Our wonderful Community Worker Steph runs the project, and recently received the following feedback from Trisha, whom she is currently supporting. Trisha said:
“Steph is my support worker at Visibility Scotland. She is exceptional. She is my lifeline as I struggle to cope with increasing sight loss and impending blindness. Steph is professional, caring, and practical. She shows great insight into my needs, emotional, and practical. Providing me with information on help available to extend my horizons, and coping strategies, practical, solving many of my problems. I am empowered by Steph’s visits, by her knowledge, positive approach, and caring. I am indebted to Visibility Scotland for allowing me such a treasure.”
Steph is hoping to take Trisha to Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre. This has been a big dream of Trisha’s, but she’s never been able to make the journey previously. This time, they are waiting for warmer weather to take Trisha on her special day trip!
