Meet our new baker George

Meet George, our new café baker! George first came to Visibility Scotland as a service user, attending our free charged up café. George quickly became a familiar face around our Glasgow office, and started volunteering. When the opportunity arose to interview for an official baker position, George rose (no bread pun intended) to the challenge, and we are now delighted to have him baking fresh sourdough bread every week.

George is registered as Severely Sight Impaired due to Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative genetic condition that impacts the retina’s light sensitive sells, causing progressive vision loss. We welcome not only George’s baking skills, but also his lived experience, to our team. When asked how he enjoys working at Visibility Scotland so far, George said:

“Coming in is the highlight of my week. The sense of camaraderie is the most important thing for me. We are all very different, but we all have something in common, and it’s quite nice.”

In his free time, George enjoys listening to music and going to the skate park. In fact, he may just be the first ever Visibility Scotland employee to skateboard to work. If you’re interested in coming along to our free café and enjoying some of George’s bread, just give us a call on 0800 987 1087 or email info@nullvisibilityscotland.org.uk – the café runs every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and every Friday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There is no cost, but donations are always appreciated, and we do ask that you book a spot as it is quite popular.
