  • Common vision changes associated with stroke and ABI.
  • The vision impairment support pathway and process for registering as vision impaired.
  • The DVLA’s “exceptional cases” pathway for returning to driving after sight loss due to stroke or ABI.
  • Strategies for improving safety and awareness.
  • Assistive technology.

 

Key objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand stroke and ABI related vision impairment and its prevalence in Scotland.
  • Develop confidence in supporting those affected including an understanding of why such support is needed.
  • Gain knowledge to support those affected in practical and emotional ways, such as with reading, mobility, fatigue management and more.
  • Learn how to embed positive practices within your organisation that support individuals and their families affected by stroke and ABI.
  • Have the knowledge to confidently support people with navigating DVLA’s “exceptional cases” pathway for those living with a static visual field defect.

Professional training two-day course (in-person)

This course covers everything in our one-day option. The second day of the course builds on that knowledge and provides safe space to put the theory into practice with expert professional guidance, giving you the insurance that your approach meets the needs of your patients / clients / service users.

Two-day course lasting five hours each day.

This comprehensive two day course equips health professionals to support people with vision impairments related to stroke or ABI, including the knowledge and skills needed to teach compensatory strategies that improve safety and independence.

 

Day one

  • Prevalence of stroke and acquired brain injury (ABI) vision impairment in Scotland: understanding the impact.
  • Common vision changes associated with stroke and ABI.
  • The vision impairment support pathway and process for registering as vision impaired.
  • The DVLA’s “exceptional cases” pathway for returning to driving after sight loss due to stroke or ABI.
  • Strategies for improving safety and awareness.
  • Assistive technology.

 

Day two

  • Overview of compensatory strategy training – also called scanning.
  • Considerations while scanning: path of travel, safety assessments, streetscape design, road crossings, and more.
  • Scanning principles and theory in relation to both near-distance scanning for tasks such as reading, and far-distance scanning for independent mobility and navigation, in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Basics of practical instruction and how to assess and support, including creating a mobility assessment course.
  • Advancing to more dynamic environments with street furniture.
  • Systematic search methodology within commonly encountered environments.
  • How a person’s friends or family can support with practicing scanning methodology in-between expert-led sessions.

  • Gain knowledge to support those affected in practical and emotional ways, such as with reading, mobility, fatigue management and more.

  • Have the knowledge to confidently support people with navigating DVLA’s “exceptional cases” pathway for those living with a static visual field defect.
  • Build confidence when administering vision specific standardised assessment tools.
  • Understand compensatory scanning theory and principles.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills to instruct stroke and ABI survivors with scanning techniques in a variety of environments.
  • Become equipped to pass on scanning teaching to friends, family and care staff to support individuals with additional complex needs, such as inattention, neglect, visual processing and other issues.

  • £7,500 (up to 10 attendees)

 

Note: All prices above for in-person training options do not include travel time or expenses. Travel expenses are priced at £0.45 per mile, and travel time is £50 per hour per facilitator.
