We want to say a great big ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported our Independent Living Flat appeal earlier this year. Thanks to your generosity, we raised a whopping £21,772.30, which allowed us to build and furnish the flat!
The brand new studio flat, on the ground floor of our head office in Glasgow, will be used by our experienced staff to teach everyday household skills to people living with sight loss. A particular focus will be teaching young people to develop the skills and confidence to be independent as they make the move from living at home to living alone.
The flat has been designed to replicate student accommodation and includes the latest in cutting-edge accessible household appliances including:
NEF Slide and Hide Oven : the door slides into the oven to reduce the risk of burns. The oven is positioned at waist height so that people who use a wheelchair or who experience balance difficulties can safely use the oven.
Miele GuideLine Washing Machine: features a unique braille control panel.
Sage Barista Coffee Machine: features a tactile control panel. We plan to provide barista sessions during our independent living classes.
Breville Hot Cup: no lifting or pouring required and it’s energy efficient too!
Bosch Cordless Vacuum Cleaner: a light upright hoover that’s wireless, reducing the risk of tripping.
Samsung Smart TV: with Google talk, which allows the TV to be controlled through through voice commands.
Seating: high back and armed heavy leather chair. This ergonomically designed chair to support moving from a seated position to standing.
Meeting Owl Pro: a 360-degree, 1080p HD smart video conference camera, microphone, and speaker so we can deliver sessions virtually across Scotland.
Every donation, big or small, has helped to make the flat a reality. We would like to say a special thank you to the following donors and funders for their generous support of this project:
The Curran Family
Kilpatrick Fraser Trust
The National Lottery Community Fund
MKM Building Supplies
S & D Home Improvements
Chris Dowdall and Darren Green
Skills training will be available to anyone who can travel to our Glasgow office. To find out more please contact info@nullvisibilityscotland.org.uk or call 0141 332 47632.
