Here’s what’s coming up in Visibility Scotland in August 2023:
1 August
- Ask the Expert. Nadia Northway, vision consultant and orthoptist, will be on hand to answer your questions round visual impairment as it affects young children up to five years old. There are four slots available. The session will run from 10 AM to 3.30 PM and is held at our head office: 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow G4 9BW. - Switched On! Our Switched On service is a virtual workshop that takes place on Zoom, a web-based platform, where you can receive advice in a group setting to understand and ‘Switch On’ the accessibility features on your smartphone or tablet devices. The session runs between 2 and 3.30 PM.
- Charged up café. Our weekly drop-in café that runs between 10 AM and 3 PM every Tuesday at our head office: 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow G4 9BW. Come along and enjoy some free soup with bread and some tasty sweet treats. You can also charge up your electronic devices free of charge. It’s a great way to meet and chat with other visually impaired people and find out more about our services.
2 August
- The Snail and the Whale theatre trip. Visibility Scotland is offering the chance to attend an audio-described performance of The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The story follows a tiny snail on her trip around the world in a magical, musical production!The performance will take place on Wednesday 02 August, at 11AM at The Townhouse, 102 Cadzow Street, Hamilton ML3 6HH. Places for the performance are limited. If you would like to attend, please get in touch with how many people would like to join us and the ages of any children or young people. Please note the performance is aimed at children aged 4 years and over. You can book your places by emailing us at families@nullvisibilityscotland.org.uk
- Neuro one-to-one support. One-to-one specialist rehabilitation support for those experiencing neurological sight loss. The support is offered at our head office, 2 Queen’s Crescent Glasgow, G4 9BW.
3 August
- Parent and child toastie making workshops. Two workshops are available: one for 6-11 year old children, and one for 12-17 year olds. In these sessions children and young people will learn basic kitchen skills including spreading, mixing, cutting, chopping, and opening packets. Parents will learn how to support them in developing these skills at home. There will be handy hints for the kitchen including preparation, hygiene, organisation, kitchen safety, and washing dishes. Older participants taking part in the toastie making will also learn skills for using sharp knives and hot equipment safely. Please note: all children must be accompanied by a parent at either workshop.
- Positive Outlook. Face-to-face session offering advice, emotional support and information for those newly diagnosed with sight loss. The group runs from 10.30 AM to 12.30 PM.
4 August
- Neuro self-management group. The group for those experiencing neurological sight loss runs between 1 PM to 2 PM at our head office: 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow G4 9BW.
8 August
- Charged up café. Our weekly drop-in café that runs between 10 AM and 3 PM every Tuesday at our head office: 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow G4 9BW. Come along and enjoy some free soup with bread and some tasty sweet treats. You can also charge up your electronic devices free of charge. - As part of our Charged Up café, the welfare rights team from Deafblind Scotland will be on hand from 10 AM to 1 PM to offer 45-minute welfare rights appointments. There are four appointments available.

- Digital drop-in. For face-to-face assistance with your existing devices, we are offering a new ‘Digital Drop In’ service between 1 PM and 3PM. These small, group classes are geared towards people who may need additional support in order to join one of our virtual ‘Switched On’ workshops. They will take place in our Digital Suite at 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow, G4 9BW.
21 August
