Patient Support Services

Our Patient Support Services provide tailored practical and emotional support to vision impaired patients across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, as well as NHS Lothian. 

What is patient support?

Visibility Scotland’s Patient Support Services cover NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lothian.

Visibility Scotland’s Patient Support Service offers specialised advice and access to services designed to support people of any age with vision impairment. The service is delivered by a skilled and knowledgeable team who listen to your needs and tailor the support to match your needs and areas of interest.

 

Our service is not timebound, meaning you can talk to the patient support worker for as long as you need.

 

Support provided includes, but is not limited to:

  • Information, advice on aids and strategies promoting independence
    • Information ranges from education, employment, travel, benefits, vision-related difficulties, recreational activities and much, much more
  • Access to vision impairment support services
  • Emotional and wellbeing support
  • Follow-up advice for low-vision aids
  • Assistive technology demonstrations
  • Groups and courses that provide peer support
  • Advocacy
  • Accessing and understanding the certificate of vision impairment (CVI) registration process and criteria

This service is only available to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lothian citizens. If you do not live within one of these health boards, our Listening Ear project can help you. To find out more information, click the link below:

Hospital based support

In addition to telephone based support, we have an in person presence at the following locations.

 

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Face to face support from the patient support team is available for patients attending NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Low Vision Clinic appointments at:

 

  • Gartnavel General Hospital (Monday to Friday)
  • RAH, Paisley (every Wednesday)
  • Stobhill, Bishopbriggs (every Tuesday PM)
  • New Victoria, Glasgow south side (every Tuesday PM and Thursday AM)
  • Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (every second Wednesday – contact our team for dates)
  • Vale of Leven Hospital (second Monday of every month)

 

If you do not have an eye clinic appointment and would like to meet the team at an arranged time please phone us on 0141 332 4632.

 

This service is funded by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. 

 

NHS Lothian

Face to face support from the patient support team is available for patients attending NHS Lothian Low Vision Clinic appointments at:

  • St. John’s Hospital (Wednesday to Friday)
  • Western General Hospital (every second Thursday – contact our team for dates)

 

We also offer support in the community based out of Edinburgh Community Rehabilitation and Support Services (ECRSS). This is available on Mondays by appointment only. To get in touch please email edinburgh@visibilityscotland.org.uk or call 0131 378 1874.
