Switched On

Our Switched On sessions take place on the first Tuesday of the month and offer group support on the accessibility features of smartphones and tablets (both iOS and Android).

 

Sessions are open to anyone with vision impairment in Scotland and take place on Zoom. Participants will have the opportunity to speak to our tech experts in small groups in breakout rooms.

Neurological sight loss

We run regular three week self-management courses for anyone living with neurological vision-impairment across Scotland. These are delivered by phone or video call. These group sessions include:

 

  • an explanation of different types of neurological vision impairment
  • information on registration, benefits and other local vision impairment services
  • advice on the use of technology and accessibility
  • discussion of strategies to manage your vision impairment.

Right to Dream: An introduction to human rights

We are delighted to be working in partnership with Deafblind Scotland to pilot a training course that aims to support vision-impaired people to better understand their human rights.

Drop yer Stitches Crafting Group

Drop yer Stitches is an informal crafting group where people can come and try new crafts or simply enjoy the company of each other.

 

The group runs from our head office at 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow, G4 9BW every Monday from 10 AM to 12:30 PM.

 

Teas and coffee are provided and a small donation towards any material costs are always welcome.

Movement class

Come along to enjoy our chair-based movement class. The class is run by our friends at New Rhythms for Glasgow.

 

The classes run every second Friday from 11 AM to 12:30 PM at our head office at 2 Queen’s Crescent, Glasgow G4 9BW.

 

There is a maximum of eight people per session.

Positive Outlook

Our three week Positive Outlook courses cover practical and emotional tips to help you manage any day to day challenges you may experience following a diagnosis of vision impairment. They also provide an opportunity to talk to other vision-impaired people and share hints, tips and experiences.

 

Our courses cover the following topics:

  • understanding different types of vision impairment
  • the registration process
  • daily living skills
  • helpful equipment
  • mobility tips
  • local activities
  • technology and apps to make life easier.

 

Courses are available across Scotland. These are delivered both face to face and over the phone in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dumfries and Galloway and take place over the phone or online in other areas. A family member or carer is welcome to attend with you.

Food classes for young people

Visibility Scotland runs practical cooking sessions for young people up to age 25 from our accessible teaching kitchen at Queen’s Crescent. Our specialist dietician partners, Food Heroes, deliver the sessions. These sessions focus on getting young people and families cooking together. These sessions will:

• Increase awareness of healthy eating from a young age
• Increase maths, reading and language skills
• Develop essential life skills
• Support physical wellbeing
• Support mental wellbeing by building intergenerational relationships
• Increase attention span and focus

Socialisation Sessions

Freedom & Joy also provide group workshops for children and young people, split into age-appropriate groups for 10 to 17s and 18 to 25s.
The sessions focus on socialising and discuss some of the challenges vision-impaired young people face as well as identifying solutions.
These groups will be supportive and offer a unique environment to forge friendships, build confidence and empower the group to share new experiences.

These sessions take place at our Glasgow offices but are open to those who can travel.
