Patient Support Service at St. John's Hospital

Our Patient Support Service at St. John’s Hospital provides tailored practical and emotional support to patients attending hospital eye appointments.

If you are vision-impaired, our friendly team can help with:

  • making the most of your vision
  • the registration process
  • reading and navigation
  • technology and assistive apps
  • benefits and entitlements
  • emotional support and much more.

Our patient support team are based in the eye department at St. John’s Hospital. Patients who have an eye clinic appointment can drop-in to meet with a member of our team Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you do not have an eye clinic appointment and would like to speak to the team please phone us on 0141 332 4632.

Our Paediatric Patient Support Service provides support to families of children and young people living with sight loss across the Lothians. We can help you to understand your child’s eye condition and how you can support them. 

If you are the parent or guardian of a child or young person living with with sight loss, our friendly team can help with:

  • emotional and practical support 
  • signposting and referrals to local and national services
  • opportunities to meet other families
  • introduction to aids and equipment 
  • challenges your child may experience and strategies that can help.

This service is telephone based, however there will be opportunities to attend courses and events.

Access to this service is by referral only. If you would like to access the service please speak to your NHS team and ask them to refer your child to Visibility Scotland’s Paediatric Patient Support Service.
